Welcome to the Halifax Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni
The Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni (VGH) was officially established Tuesday March 2, 1920 by the Superintendent of Nurses, Bertha Pickles and has never digressed from having meetings on the first Tuesday of the month for one hundred years. An amazing feat. The Alumni has operated continuously since this date by volunteers and totally funded by the VGH School of Nursing Alumni. The school actually started in 1890 and graduated 5000 nurses when the school closed in 1995. [more about the Alumni]
The VG Hospital School for Nursing was established in 1891 by Dr. C. Jacques, a member of the Executive Council of Nova Scotia, and approved by the Lt. Governor. Six members were in the first nursing class and lectures were held by doctors, once a week. The graduates were referred to as "Senior Nurses". [more about the School of Nursing]
